Coaching Staff
Dan Wood
Dan is entering his 12th season coaching with Stevenson and the second one as Hockey Director and Head Varsity Coach. He has held many coaching roles at Stevenson, including: JV Assistant Coach (2 seasons), JV White Co-Head Coach (1 season) and Varsity Assistant Coach (8 seasons). During his coaching tenure with Stevenson, many historical firsts were achieved including: First Varsity State Championship (2021-2022), Varsity USA Hockey Nationals Runner Up (2021-2022), Varsity State Runner-Up (2017-2018), 3 Varsity Final Four Appearances, JV State Championship (2012-2013 Season), Third JV Final Four Appearance (2013-2014 Season) and JV White Divisional League Championship (2017-2018 Season).
In addition to coaching Stevenson, Dan is the Head ACHA Coach at St Norbert College. Prior to this, he was the Head Coach and Hockey Director at DePaul University for three seasons. While at DePaul, he took the team from being consistently a top 30 team in the region to a top 10 team in the region, topping out at 12th nationally.
Dan grew up playing hockey in the Chicagoland Area with the Highland Park Falcons program with a one-year stint at the Chill AAA program. Dan played Varsity hockey at Stevenson High school for 4 years. In addition to playing hockey, Dan was a nationally ranked Olympic Weightlifter, winning the State Championship 3 years in a row. After Stevenson, he played 4 years at Miami University of Ohio on their ACHA D2 team graduating with a degree in Finance. Dan is a USA Hockey Level 5 Coach.
Hockey Director & Varsity Green Head Coach
Marc Shellist
Marc is in his seventh year as an Assistant Coach on Varsity Green and his first year as Head Coach of Varsity Gold in their inaugural season. Marc was on the coaching staff for their first appearance at the United Center for the Varsity State Championship (2017-2018).
In addition to coaching at Stevenson, he is a head coach for the Ice Dogs Hockey Association. He has been with the Ice Dogs for over 16 years as both a coach and the Club's president. Marc has coached in both NIHL and CSDHL at every level and has won championships in both leagues, NIHL U14 (2017) and CSDHL U15 (2018).

Don Howard
Don Howard grew up on the far north side of Chicago. He has four kids, three adults and one is currently college student. His wife is a Math teacher at Stevenson and has been since 2011. Don also coaches Field Hockey and Girls Lacrosse at Stevenson. He had a thirty year career in the financial business, mostly at the Chicago Board of Trade.
Don has played youth hockey at Evanston. He began coaching hockey over 25 years ago, and has been a former Hockey Director. He has coached Varsity and Midget Major through learn to skate. Don has made a few state championships, won a number of league titles, as well as received a few coaching accolades.
Don's philosophy is coaching is about development. His objective is to get players ready for the next level, increasing their hocky IQ, skill set, and the competitiveness of each player.
JV White Head Coach
Brian Murtha
Brian has held many roles at Stevenson Hockey over 8 seasons. He is currently a Varsity Green Assistant Coach. During his time with the program he's been the JV Gold Head Coach, JV Gold Assistant Coach, JV White Assistant Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach.
Brian grew up playing hockey in the Chicagoland Area starting with the Glenview Stars and eventually making his way to Stevenson High School as a 3 year Varsity player. After Stevenson, Brian played 2 years for Robert Morris (now, Roosevelt University) on their ACHA D1 team and he finished his college playing at Miami University of Ohio on their ACHA D2 team.
Varsity Green/Gold Assistant Coach
Sean Hammond
Sean is in his second year coaching at Stevenson as a Varsity Green Assistant Coach and the All Program Dryland/Off-Ice Coach. Prior to joining Stevenson, he coached at St Ignatius for several seasons. Over the past three years, Sean was an Assistant Coach at DePaul University. The 24/25 season he will be stepping into the Hockey Director and Head Coach role at DePaul.
When he's not on the ice, Sean is at Tomahawk Science working as a personal trainer to many Chicago-area professional athletes.
Like other coaches within the program, Sean is a Stevenson alumni and shared time on the ice with both Dan and Brian.

Sam Shellist
Sam is in his first year coaching at Stevenson Hockey as a JV White Assistant Coach. Sam is Stevenson alumni and played on the 2017-2018 team for the program's first state championship appearance at the United Center.
JV White Assistant Coach
Billy Kopka
Billy grew up playing hockey in the area and graduated from Stevenson in 2019. He was a part of the programs first ever state championship game in 2018 and was named to the Illinois All-State team in 2019. After Stevenson, he went on to play 4 years at the ACHA D2 level for the University of Minnesota until graduating in 2023.

Sam Spector
Sam is in his first year coaching at Stevenson as part of the JV White team. Like the other coaches he is also an alumni and played all 4 years on Varsity. After graduating high school in 2015 he went on to play ACHA D2 at Augustana College.

Cristina Hurtado, LAT, ATC, MBA
Cristina is entering her third season with the Stevenson Hockey Program as the Head Athletic Trainer. Received her bachelor's degree in Athletic Training in 2019 and her MBA in 2020 both from Aurora University. Cristina has had a deep passion for hockey since childhood. Being able to combine her love for hockey and sports medicine has been a dream come true. Cristina works at Stevenson during 8th hour and after school during the school year if any player needs to see her for injuries during games or practices.
In addition to Stevenson, Cristina helps with other high school and youth hockey programs in the area. Including but limited to Chicago Bulldogs, Chicago Blues, Glenbard High School co-op, Warren High school and the Chicago Crush of the USPHL.
